What is AndroGel?
AndroGel is a widely marketed drug often prescribed to treat the signs of low testosterone, including chronic fatigue, decreased libido, and loss of energy. Until recently, there was no warning label indicating an increased risk of heart attack on any of the drugs in this class.
In order to qualify for this drug and others like it, your doctor should have checked you for a hypogonadism, or low testosterone levels due a disorder affecting the testicles, brain, or pituitary gland. In a March 2015 announcement, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clarified that AndroGel is not approved for use in cases where a patient is experiencing low testosterone due to aging.
The FDA also stated that all testosterone therapy drugs must feature a black box warning label informing patients that use of these drugs puts them at an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. The FDA also directs health care professionals to make their patients aware of these risks.

What are the risks of taking AndroGel?
Several studies have shown that men using testosterone therapies, like AndroGel, are at an increased risk for heart attack, stroke, and other forms of cardiovascular disease.
One study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, found a 25% increase in heart attacks, strokes, and death following testosterone treatment.
Common side effects of AndroGel usage include:
- Heart attack;
- Pulmonary embolism;
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT);
- Wrongful death;
- Venus thromboembolism; and
If you took AndroGel and have not already done so, seek medical care immediately. Inform your doctor of the drug you took and make sure that they record the results of any tests or diagnoses in your medical records. Our attorneys can use this medical evidence to establish the onset and severity of any medical complications you suffered as a result of taking AndroGel.
What are my legal rights if I took AndroGel?
If you have suffered a range of cardiac-related health issues after taking AndroGel or a similar drug, you may be able to file suit against the drug manufacturer because of their failure to adequately warn patients of the dangers involved in taking these drugs.
A growing number of people are pursuing lawsuits for claims involving heart attacks, strokes, wrongful death, and other health problems that they believe are directly correlated with use of AndroGel and other low-testosterone prescriptions.
Thousands of cases are being filed across the country, and in 2014, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) took steps to coordinate proceedings and assign one judge to centralize discovery, maintain consistency with lawsuit rulings, and oversee all low testosterone cases.
In 2016, a judge selected eight cases to move forward to trial. Four of the initial cases involve heart attack or stroke and the other four involve venous thromboembolism.
As the first AndroGel case reaches its 2017 trial date, pharmaceutical manufacturers are under increased pressure to settle cases before receiving jury settlements, which may include punitive damages for gross negligence.
Can I file a lawsuit?
To successfully pursue a lawsuit against drug manufacturers, our attorneys can review the unique facts in your case to make a determination of how strong a position you have.
To win your case, we will have to show evidence of several factors, including:
- Your doctor prescribed AndroGel or another similar treatment drug;
- AndroGel caused you or your loved to suffer a heart attack, stroke, wrongful death, or other health problem;
- The extent and severity of your injury;
- The economic damages resulting from your injury, including medical bills, lost wages, lost or diminished earning capacity, and ongoing or future medical bills as a result of the health issue; and
- The extent of your pain and suffering.
In the case of wrongful death, juries may also consider factors such as lifetime earning potential, loss of parenting time, or loss of love, affection, and companionship by the spouse. We may also be able to demand punitive damages for gross negligence by the pharmaceutical manufacturers.
